Apoptosis in S49 (Neo) cells is both a rapid and synchronous under osmotic stress. S49 (Neo) cells were treated with 500 mOsm mannitol for 30, 60, 90, or 120 min, prior to being returned to normal media for various periods of time where they were examined for a loss of membrane integrity. Cells treated for 30 min with 500 mOsm mannitol did not result in a significant increase in dead cells, however cells treated with for either 60, 90, or 120 min resulted in a time dependent rapid increase in the number of dead cells in a synchronous manner. Data represent the mean (± S.E.) of three independent experiments. *, p < 0.01; **, p < 0.001 versus time matched control.
