Illustration of the definition of the helix angle. In this figure, peptide 1a is represented schematically. Here the two peptides align with their end-to-end vectors parallel. A vector is defined between two fixed atoms on the helix backbone for each peptide (the α-carbon of the fifth residue and the β-carbon of the sixth residue). In this case, the angle is near 180°.
