Encapsulated rat islets were perifused in the presence of 3 mM glucose for 60 min. Glucose was increased to 20 mM at time 0 and then decreased to 0 mM after 35 min. Subsequently, glucose was increased to 20 mM for ten min, and then glucose was changed between 20 mM and 0 mM every 5 min for one hour.
