Immunofluorescence detection of gE expression. Vero cells were infected at an MOI of 1 with the viruses indicated, and gE expression was detected by indirect immunofluorescence at 24 hpi. (Top row) Phase-contrast micrographs of infected cells treated with anti-gE MAb; (bottom row) fluorescent micrographs of the same infected cells. All mutant viruses containing the ATG-to-CTG mutations in gE (ΔgE) failed to react with anti-gE antibody, while viruses expressing the wild-type gE reacted with anti-gE antibody.
