Schematic representation to illustrate the dual association of MeCP2 with different chromatin domains in the brain. Shown in the right is a magnified image of the interaction of MeCP2 within the nucleosome fraction. Methylation of DNA in the vicinity of the nucleosome (in the proximity of the entry and exit sites of the DNA) as well as histone PTMs (such as H3K27me3) or histone variants may play a role in the interaction. Also shown is a site of interaction of the C-terminal tail of MeCP2 with the N-terminal of histone H2A.
