The pan-caspase inhibitor Q-VD-OPH inhibits EPEC-induced host epithelial cell death. T84 monolayers were treated with 40 µM Q-VD-OPH for 1 h, followed by infection with EPEC in the continued presence of the inhibitor. Dead cells that have become permeable to ethidium homodimer display red fluorescence (A). Cell death evaluated from 10 independent fields is represented as a percentage of total number of cells per field (B), where Q = Q-VD-OPH (n = 10, P < 0.001 for EPEC − Q-VD-OPH vs. EPEC + Q-VD-OPH).
