RBD diagnostic criteria according to the International Classification of Sleep Disorders Second edition (ICSD-II)17

  1. Presence of REM sleep without atonia: the EMG finding of excessive amounts of sustained or intermittent elevation of submental EMG tone or excessive phasicsubmental or (upper or lower) limb EMG twitching.

  2. At least one of the following is present:

    1. Sleep related injurious, or disruptive behaviors by history

    2. Abnormal REM sleep behaviors documented during PSG monitoring

  3. Absence of EEG epileptiform activity during REM sleep unless RBD can be clearly distinguished from any concurrent REM sleep related seizure disorder.

  4. The sleep disturbance is not better explained by another sleep disorder, medical or neurological disorders, mental disorders, medication use, or substance use disorder.
