Auditory response profile of typical BOS-ONLY and CON-ONLY neurons: 2 examples from different classes of neurons (see text for how classes were defined). A: like the majority of BOS-ONLY neurons, this exemplar shows a modest, phasic excitatory response to BOS (RSINDEX = 0.12, top). The BOS stimulus used in this experiment consisted of 4 individual motifs (M1–M4). The BOS response of this neuron was stronger for M2–M4 than for M1, a feature sometimes observed in BOS-ONLY neurons. Response to CON stimuli (bottom) tended to be slightly suppressed relative to baseline (RSINDEX = −0.093). Moderate suppression to CON stimuli was common in BOS-ONLY neurons.
