The VDAC1 pore forms an ellipse with approximate dimensions of 24 and 27 Angstroms, while the diameter of a DMPC molecule was reported to be 8.7 Angstroms. Left: 12 DMPC molecules in the two halves of the bilayer are required to form a shell around a monomer of the protein. Right: VDAC1 dimers would require 18–20 DMPC molecules to form a shell if some lipids are shared between molecules or overlapping protein-protein interactions preclude the need for a complete annulus between molecules.
