The red trace shows the effective synaptic current measured at the soma during stretch of ankle flexor and extensor muscles in the push–pull (pp) arrangement. In the blue trace, only the extensor muscles are stretched and shortened while the flexors are held at a fixed length (non-push–pull). Note the dramatic reduction synaptic current in the non-push–pull condition (blue trace).
