The red trace shows reflex force generated in ankle extensor muscles when the agonist and antagonist muscles are stretched and shortened in a push—pull (PP) manner. When the antagonist muscle is held at a constant length and extensor muscles are stretched and shortened alone, resulting reflex forces arise from excitation alone. Note the drastically reduced force in this push–pull disrupted arrangement (blue trace).
