Perinatal mitochondrial biogenesis is blocked in PGC-1αβ hearts. Representative electron micrographs of cardiac muscle sections (left ventricular free wall) at day 1 after birth. Arrows denote vacuoles within the mitochondria. Quantitative measurements of the cellular volume density for the mitochondrial fractions based on analysis of electron micrographs reveal that the perinatal increase in mitochondrial density is completely blocked in the PGC-1αβ-/- mice.
