Universal model of sleep-dependent hippocampal-neocortical memory consolidation. (A) At encoding the hippocampus rapidly integrates information within distributed cortical modules. (B) Successive sleep-dependent reactivation of this hippocampal-cortical network leads to progressive strengthening of cortico-cortical connections, (C) which over time, allow these memories to become independent of the hippocampus and gradually integrated with pre-existing cortical memories.
