Schematic depicting the adult phenotype of γ2+/− mice when GABAA receptors (GABAARs) are downregulated in the forebrain at different time points during development. (A) Downregulation beginning on embryonic day 10 caused an anxiogenic-like and pro-depressant-like phenotype along with HPA axis hyperactivity in adult animals (Earnheart et al., 2007). (B) Postnatal downregulation beginning on postnatal day 17 also caused HPA axis hyperactivity but did not impact anxiety- and depressive-like behaviors in adults (Shen et al., 2010).
