Production of cytokines and chemokines by mouse vaginal explants cultured with N. gonorrhoeae. Vaginal tissue from WT or IL-22-ko mice was incubated in vitro in medium only (control) or with N. gonorrhoeae at a concentration of 2 × 107 CFU/ml. Supernatants were assayed after 3 days for cytokines and chemokines by ELISA. Results are shown as mean ± SD of triplicate cultures. Cytokine or chemokine production by WT tissue in the presence of N. gonorrhoeae was significantly higher than in corresponding controls, or than by IL-22-ko tissue in the presence of N. gonorrhoeae, as indicated by the bars: **P < 0.01; *P < 0.05 (Student’s t).
