GABAergic neurons fire bursts of action potentials during inspiration. Cells were patch clamped in the current clamp configuration with a small amount of current when needed (<30 pA) injected to hold it at −65 mV. Inspiratory activity was measured from the hypoglossal rootlets (top two traces). Respiratory activity was greatly reduced in this population of cells. (Control: 1.7+/−0.4 Hz; CNQX & AP5: 0.2+/−0.3 Hz; p<0.05).
