Elytra from beetles on day 2 after adult eclosion were examined by dynamic mechanical analysis over a frequency range of 0.1 to 600 rad/s. Typical scans are shown in the top panels, and mean values at 1 rad/s are presented in the lower panels. Error bars represent standard deviation (n = 3–4). The asterisk indicates significant difference from the dsVer control (p<0.05) as determined by analysis of variance and Tukey's Multiple Comparison Test. Reduced expression of the abundant CPR proteins resulted in weaker (smaller E′) yet more cross-linked (smaller tan δ) elytra.
