Schematic diagram of the binding dynamics of a BAR domain to a lipid bilayer. The adhesion process is divided into three steps. The first step (a) is the electrostatic attraction between the positively charged tips of a BAR domain and negatively charged lipids attracted to both tips. The second step (b) is the insertion of hydrophobic protrusions into the inner leaflet of a lipid bilayer, which generates a slight curvature to the membrane. The third step (c) maybe electrostatic attraction between positively charged amino acids of the BAR domain to the lipid bilayer, thereby bending the membrane to match the intrinsic curvature of the BAR domain.
