Undisturbed α-adrenergic transmission is required for song-induced gene expression and the long-term maintenance of song-adaptation yet does affect short-term habituation, indicating separate mechanisms. Blocking the downstream transcription (actinomycin) and translation events (cycloheximide) also results in disruption of long-lasting adaptation.
