Demonstration of shape memory behavior of a foam. A 6 mm cylindrical sample of H60 foam was compressed in a mechanical crimper above its Tg and then allowed to cool down to fix the compressed shape. The compressed foam was taped to a rod (seen in the last two panes) and then plunged in a water bath heated to 80 °C. Actuation is seen immediately on contact with water and up to 70 times expansion in volume is observed. Approximate time between panes is 1 sec. Scale bar is 2.5 mm.
