^aPS533 and PS767 spores were prepared and purified and SD spores were prepared by germination with l-valine as described in Materials Methods. Purified spores were decoated and lysed, extracts were assayed for β-galactosidase, and specific activities were calculated as described in Materials and Methods.

^bβ-Galactosidase specific activities were determined in duplicate for two independent dormant and SD spore preparations, and values are given as relative fluorescence units (RFU). Values shown are the averages ± variations between the values for the independent spore preparations.
