The direct communication between species Q and R (“Cd internalization”) is important for the kinetics of metal binding but is thermodynamically irrelevant. In the cartoons, cadmium(II) is represented as a green circle, Cys-SH groups as yellow circles, Glu-COO− groups as red circles and Lys NH3+ groups as blue circles.
