Paraffin sections stained to detect (A) IgA1 and (B) IgA2. Cells with cytoplasmic immunoglobulin of both subclasses can be observed in germinal centers (dotted circles) demonstrating that the mesenteric nodes could be classified as a non-GALT site of induction for IgA responses. The presence of cells with cytoplasmic IgA2 in mesenteric nodes (arrows) also demonstrates that switching to IgA2 is not only a feature of terminal differentiation in the colonic lamina propria.
