Ail binds 120-kDa fragment of Fn. A, Fn fragments used in this study are illustrated. B, Fn, commercially available proteolytically generated Fn fragments, and purified recombinant Fn fragments were adsorbed onto plastic wells (10 μg/ml). E. coli AAEC185 derivatives expressing empty vector and Ail were added to the wells and allowed to bind at 37 °C. Bound bacteria were stained with 0.01% crystal violet, washed, and the cells were then solubilized, to read the A595. C, wells were coated with various forms of Fn (10 μg/ml), and L. lactis derivatives were added as described above. *, p < 0.01; **, p < 0.00005. FnBP binding to 30 kDa had a p = 0.055, FnBP binding to N-5FNI had a p = 0.071. Error bars, S.D.
