Neuronal DNA damage in epilepsy relative to APOE genotype Neurons with nuclear DNA damage were present in similar numbers in analogous areas of temporal lobe for both APOE genotypes (A and C). However, the extent of damage per neuron, as assessed by semi-quantitative analysis of TUNEL fluorescence intensity (arbitrary units, au) in these areas, was greater in patients with APOE ε4,4 than in those with APOE ε3,3 genotype (APOE ε4,4 = 67.1 ± 9.5 vs APOE ε3,3 = 39.2 ± 2.3; P = 0.01) (B and D).
