Administration of reuptake inhibitors blocks monoamine transport back into the presynaptic neurons. This leads to a net redistribution of neurotransmitter molecules from the presynaptic neuron to the synapse. The increased synaptic level of monoamines increases post-synaptic flow of electricity leading to restoration of adequate regulation of function and/or relief of symptoms.
