Mucoid phenotypes engage in apparent competition which confers a signicant fitness advantage in the presence of phage sensitive bacteria; asterisk (*) indicates a significant difference compared to control. The large variability in fitness for UM phenotypes is attributed to the UM phenotype being phage positive or negative.
