Urokinase plasminogen activator receptor (uPAR) is increased in asthmatic bronchial epithelium. Bronchial biopsy sections from controls and subjects with asthma were stained with (A) isotype control or (B–E) anti-uPAR antibody. A semiquantitative staining score of 0=none (B), 1=low (C), 2=moderate (D) or 3=high (E) was applied to each section and two sections were scored per subject. (F) uPAR protein levels were higher in the bronchial epithelium of patients with asthma than in normal controls, irrespective of severity (p=0.002). *p<0.05, **p<0.01.
