Diagram of the auditory CS neural pathway (green) and modulatory inputs to this pathway (blue). A tone CS initiates activity in auditory brainstem nuclei (ABN) that project to the medial auditory thalamus (MAT). The MAT then projects CS input to the cerebellum (CB) through the pontine nuclei (PN). The cerebellum sends excitatory feedback to the MAT (red arrow), and the amygdala (AM) sends excitatory input to the MAT through the auditory cortex (AC) (red arrows). The dashed lines indicate possible sources of developmental change that directly or indirectly affect the ontogeny of MAT activity.
