Parasite burdens in the liver of dogs naturally infected with Leishmania (L.) infantum after treatment with liposomal meglumine antimoniate (LMA), allopurinol (Allop), empty liposomes (LEMP), or the LMA+Allop or LEMP+Allop combination. LMA (6.5 mg Sb/kg/dose), empty liposomes (same dose of lipid), and saline (same volume) were given intravenously as six doses at 4-day intervals. Allopurinol was given at 20 mg/kg/24 h per os for 140 days, starting from the first dose of LMA. Parasite burdens were determined by qPCR as described in Materials and Methods.
