In this simulation there are two cells. Each has two types of reactants of species type A, B. Internally there is a single reaction Inline graphic for each cell. Figure 4a shows the configuration at time Inline graphic when there is no physical overlap (therefore no interaction) between the cells. The size of the total reaction network is 2. Figure 4b shows overlap between the cells. This sets up diffusion (due to cell membrane paths that may open) of species between the two cells, thus increasing the size of the total reaction network to 6. This sets up a problem where there is a dynamic rearrangement of the total chemical network based on cell configuration.
