Cell death detection using TUNEL staining in the ischemic penumbra. Ischemic brains harvested 24 h after stroke were post-fixed with 4% PFA and 20% sucrose for 24 h, and sectioned for TUNEL and DAPI staining. No TUNEL-positive staining was detected in sham animals, but positive cells were abundant in ischemic brains with control ischemia.
