Model type I alveolar epithelial monolayers were derived from primary cells isolated from either control (A) or alcohol fed (B) rats which were cultured for 6 days and then immunolabeled for cldn-7. In contrast with control alveolar epithelial cells, where cldn-7 prominently localized to sites of cell-cell contact (A), cells isolated from alcohol fed rats had impaired claudin assembly (B) which correlated with impaired barrier function.
