Fig. 5.
Whole body metabolism in CD2F1 mice injected subcutaneously with C-26 cells inducing mild or severe cachexia, or with PBS and fed ad libitum (PBS) or pair-fed to the severe C-26-tumor-bearing mice (PBS PF). At 19 days following injection of PBS or C-26 cells, mice were placed in an Open Field Metabolic Chamber for 24 hours and total carbohydrate (CHO; A) and fat (B) oxidation rates were calculated from VO2 and VCO2 data. Absolute (C) and normalized (D) energy expenditure were used to determine CHO (E) and fat (F) oxidation as a percentage of total energy expenditure. Results are shown as the average for 6 hours each of the light and dark cycles, and for the average of both the light and dark cycles (12-hour period). Data are means ± s.e.m.; n=6 for PBS; 7 for PBS PF; 6 for C-26 mild and 8 for C-26 severe. aP<0.05 PBS versus PBS PF; bP<0.05 PBS versus C-26 mild; cP<0.05 PBS PF versus C-26 severe; dP<0.05 C-26 mild versus C-26 severe.
