Summary of frontal and posterior cortical activations found in various positron emission tomography, functional MRI, and cellular studies of semantic (filled squares) and phonological (open squares) processing of visual and auditory words. The more anterior of the left frontal areas seems to be largely related to meaning of words, and the more posterior frontal area is more related to sound. Distinctions within the right hemisphere and posterior areas are less clear.
