Morph-biased genes have higher ancestral rates of molecular evolution than do unbiased genes. Comparison of unbiased genes and morph-biased genes in average rate of molecular evolution (dN/dS) for each branch on the phylogeny; gray boxes indicate the two species in which alternative, environmentally induced tadpoles have evolved. The tree is unrooted and dN/dS values were calculated by summing estimates of nonsynonymous and synonymous substitutions across genes within a gene class.
