Upon the aberrant activation of oncogenes cells can either undergo apoptosis or cellular senescence. Pre-malignant senescent hepatocytes are subject to a continuous CD4 T-cell mediated immune clearance which is crucial for liver cancer suppression. CD4 T-cells depend on monocytes/macrophages to execute the killing of pre-malignant senescent hepatocytes.
