Inattention allowed the kiln to overheat, burning out the crucible and spilling the molten metal into the bottom of the kiln, where it burned a hole and flowed onto the ground underneath. The hole can be seen in Figure 5 (left) but did not affect further operation of the kiln. High quality figures and videos are available online.
