(A) Schematic representation of the biosynthesis of jasmonic acid and jasmonic acid-regulated insecticidal metabolites. Specific enzymatic and perception steps in these pathways were genetically altered by either RNAi-mediated silencing (genes in red font) or ectopic gene expression (gene in blue font) in N. attenuata plants. The mechanisms underlying Empoasca leafhoppers host choice were revealed in nature (B) and in the glasshouse (C). We exploited these feeding choice mechanisms and used Empoasca leafhoppers to identify natural variation in jasmonic acid signaling of native N. attenuata populations (D).
