Lane a corresponds to a standard prepared from a pool of vervet VL samples; it includes the five MHC isoforms (IIA, IIX, IIB, IIB′, and I) identified as pure or expressed in combination in single fibers. Lanes b-i illustrate myofibers expressing one or many MHCs. B. Quantification of myofibers containing type I, IIA/IIX, IIA+IIX, IIA+IIX, or multiple MHC combinations in VL muscles from young (498 single fibers) and old (456 single fibers) monkeys.
