Plasma nitrate levels from different oral formulations of sodium nitrite. The immediate release (IR) formulation gave significant elevations of plasma nitrate compared with baseline at 0.75, 1.0, 1.5, and 2 h, but there was no significant increase in nitrate above baseline with the enteric-coated (EC) formulation at any time point.
