The spectra of (a) 40 μM OH(H2O)Cbi+, (b) sufficient CN− spiked to a to bring total CN− concentration to 20 μM, immediately after mixing, (c) >80 μM CN− spiked into a, (d) spectra of 40 μM CN(H2O)Cbi+ directly synthesized according to [6]. The spectrum in b is a poor match to d but matches (e) a linear combination of a and c, showing (CN)2Cbi and not CN(H2O)Cbi+ must be initially formed.
