A subpopulation of the dnaN159 cells is induced for the SOS response. Strains JH107 (dnaN+ lexA+), JH108 (dnaN159 lexA+), JH109 [dnaN+ lexA3(Ind−)], and JH110 [dnaN+ lexA51(Def)] bearing the sulApΩgfp-mut2 SOS reporter were analyzed using flow cytometry as described in Materials and Methods.
