Diagram showing the input and output structure of SPRITE and ASSAM. (i) SPRITE accepts a whole structure in PDB format as input and (ii) compares it against a database of 3D motifs. (iii) The output is a list of amino acids in the query structure that matches to patterns in the database. (iv) ASSAM’s inputs can be either any 2–12 pattern residues given by the user, or selected from the hit residues in the query structure of a SPRITE search. (v) ASSAM then compares this pattern to representative structures in the PDB. (vi) The ASSAM output is a list of PDB structures that contain the query motif. An example is shown with the superposed hit residues identified and magnified as red circles.
