Glossary of Terms

Term Definition
Social media The use of technology combined with social interaction that creates greater value than the data alone
Twitter Social networking “microblogging” tool in which users denoted by “@name” unique identifiers can send and receive updates called “tweets” of 140 characters or fewer
Tweet A user-generated update of 140 characters or less
Hashtag A community-driven convention for adding context and metadata to tweets (eg, #cancer)
RT Retweet: rebroadcasting the tweet of another user
Following Subscribing to the Twitter updates of another user
Blog A Web site that contains a personal journal, commentary or reflection, which often includes hyperlinks provided by the author
Wiki A Web site developed collaboratively by a community of users, allowing any user to add and edit content
Web 2.0 Web applications that go beyond displaying individual pages of static content and allow a community of users to interact with the site and each other by adding or updating the content
