The scheme includes the flow of 11-cis-retinal into the inner segment. At the present time, the signals that regulate the flow of 11-cis-retinal from the retinal pigment epithelium to the rod photoreceptor are not well understood, and no carrier has been identified that would facilitate its migration to the inner segment.
