Molar wear (measured as proportion of dentine exposure, PDE) is age-related in both sexes, as seen here for M1—the first molar. M1 wear tends to be as great in females (filled triangles) as in males (open circles) during aging. Quadratic models: adj R2 = 0.90 for females, adj R2 = 0.69 for males. Pictured is a comparison of a young adult female (7 years old) with her elderly mother (21 years old), also a 24-year-old female.
