The previously proposed mechanisms leading to substrate peptide bond hydrolysis by the N-terminal Thr1 residue of proteasome. The Pn or Pn′ represents an amino acid residue, and the number n (n=1) refers to the nth residue to the cleavage site: P1 providing the carbonyl and P1′ the amino component.
