Education
  • Create grandparenting classes where breastfeeding information is embedded among other topics such as car seat safety and infant/child CPR.

  • Facilitate grandparenting network groups, focus groups, or online discussion groups through community organizations like churches or YMCAs and include breastfeeding as a topic of discussion.

  • Educate grandparents along with parents about breastfeeding basics, pumping, and storage of expressed breastmilk during the postpartum hospital stay.

Involvement and Support
  • Encourage dialogue between grandmothers and daughters about infant-feeding choices both past and present.

  • Encourage grandmothers to share their stories regarding their own infant-feeding choices.

  • Acknowledge grandmothers’ concerns and fears regarding breastfeeding.

  • Encourage grandmothers and daughters to attend prenatal care visits and pediatric visits together.
