Education
Create grandparenting classes where breastfeeding information is embedded among other topics such as car seat safety and infant/child CPR. Facilitate grandparenting network groups, focus groups, or online discussion groups through community organizations like churches or YMCAs and include breastfeeding as a topic of discussion. Educate grandparents along with parents about breastfeeding basics, pumping, and storage of expressed breastmilk during the postpartum hospital stay.
Involvement and Support
Encourage dialogue between grandmothers and daughters about infant-feeding choices both past and present. Encourage grandmothers to share their stories regarding their own infant-feeding choices. Acknowledge grandmothers’ concerns and fears regarding breastfeeding. Encourage grandmothers and daughters to attend prenatal care visits and pediatric visits together.
