The cumulative risk of lung cancer is fairly low (left hand bar, shown in red). However, the resulting LYL attributable to lung cancer dominate the total LYL (represented by the right hand bar), due to the poor prognosis. Conversely, despite a high cumulative lifetime risk, thyroid cancer (shown in green) contributes relatively little to the LYL due to its favorable prognosis.
